Central Anti-Virus For Small Business?Date: Wed, 17. June 2009 15:05:41
rduke15 writes "I'm trying to find a centrally managed anti-virus solution for a small business network, which has around 20 Windows XP machines with a Linux server. It is too big to manage each client manually. However, there is no no full-time IT person on site, and no Windows Active Directory server mdash; just Linux with Samba. And the current solution with Symantec Endpoint Protection seems too expensive, and too complex for such a simple need. On the Linux server side, email is handled by amavisd and ClamAV. But the WinXP clients still need a real-time anti-virus for the USB disks they may bring to work, or stuff they download from their personal webmail or other sites. I'm wondering what others may be using in similar situations, and how satisfied they are with it."pa href="http://it.slashdot.org/story/09/06/16/2126231/Central-Anti-Virus-For-Small-Business?from=rss"img src="http://slashdot.org/slashdot-it.pl?from=rssamp;op=imageamp;style=h0amp;sid=09/06/16/2126231"/a/ppa href="http://it.slashdot.org/story/09/06/16/2126231/Central-Anti-Virus-For-Small-Business?from=rss"Read more of this story/a at Slashdot./p

Firm To Drop Database, Web Server 0-DaysDate: Tue, 12. January 2010 03:30:36
krebsonsecurity writes "January promises to be a busy month for Web server and database administrators alike: A security research firm in Russia says it plans to release information about a slew of previously undocumented vulnerabilities in several widely-used commercial software products, including Mysql, Tivoli, IBM DB2, Sun Directory, and a host of others, writes krebsonsecurity.com. From the blog: 'After working with the vendors long enough, we've come to conclusion that, to put it simply, it is a waste of time. Now, we do not contact with vendors and do not support so-called "responsible disclosure" policy,' Legerov said."pa href="http://it.slashdot.org/story/10/01/11/1640232/Firm-To-Drop-Database-Web-Server-0-Days?from=rss"img src="http://slashdot.org/slashdot-it.pl?from=rssamp;op=imageamp;style=h0amp;sid=10/01/11/1640232"/a/ppa href="http://it.slashdot.org/story/10/01/11/1640232/Firm-To-Drop-Database-Web-Server-0-Days?from=rss"Read more of this story/a at Slashdot./p

Things To Look For In a Web Hosting Company?Date: Mon, 22. February 2010 15:05:22
v1x writes "I have had an account with my current web hosting company for a few years, with 3 domains being hosted there (using Linux/PHP/MySQL). Recently, all three of these websites stopped functioning, and upon checking the site, all my directory structures were intact, whereas all of the files were gone. Upon contacting their technical support, I was given the run-around, and later informed by one of their administrators that none of the files could be restored. Needless to say that I am looking for a different web hosting company at this point, but I would like to make a more informed choice than I did with the current company. I have read a similar Slashdot article (from 2005) on the topic, but the questions posed there were slightly different."
Reader mrstrano has a similar question: "I am developing a web application and, after registering the domain, I am now looking for a suitable web hosting provider.
It should be cheap enough so I can start small, but should allow me to scale up if the web site is successful (as I hope).
The idea is simple enough so I do not need other investors to implement it. This also means that I don't have a lot of money to put on it
at the moment.
Users of the website will post their pictures (no, it's not going to be a porn website), so scalability might be an issue even with a moderately high
number of users.
I would like to find a good web hosting provider from day one, so I don't have to go through the pain of a data migration.
Which web host would you choose?"pa href="http://ask.slashdot.org/story/10/02/22/0215236/Things-To-Look-For-In-a-Web-Hosting-Company?from=rss"img src="http://slashdot.org/slashdot-it.pl?from=rssamp;op=imageamp;style=h0amp;sid=10/02/22/0215236"/a/ppa href="http://ask.slashdot.org/story/10/02/22/0215236/Things-To-Look-For-In-a-Web-Hosting-Company?from=rss"Read more of this story/a at Slashdot./p

Symantec Unveils Norton Safe Web Search Security Tool BetaDate: Mon, 28. July 2008 19:56:50
Symantec Norton Safe Web aims to challenge McAfee's lead in the Web reputation space with a new beta. Norton Safe Web is a Web reputation service supported by an online directory of site reports and a user community. It rates Web site reputations and provides visual safety ratings of search results from engines such as Google and Yahoo. - Symantec has opened up a beta program for Norton Safe Web that puts
the company on course to challenge a similar offering from security rival
McAfee.
According to Symantec, Norton Safe Web is available starting today, July 28, as a plug-in

If you need to take screenshots of Web pages--and annotate them and send them to others--you'll want to immediately download FireShot (free). This excellent Firefox add-in is the best tool I've yet seen for capturing and annotating Web pages.
